Maryland picked up yet another commitment on Friday in Pallotti safety Alex Moore on Friday while also making the cut for two prospects who officially visited in June.
Hickory (NC) four star Rico Walker announced a top five of Auburn, Florida, Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee with the Tar Heels drawing the most buzz. While Walker is getting looks on both sides of the ball through his recruitment, Maryland is recruiting the four-star as a tight end with receivers coach Gunter Brewer leading the way.
“I like both positions but they were showing me more of the offensive side. I like how they use their tight ends and how they fit in the offense,” he said following his official visit. “Their tight end caught a lot of passes last year and then got drafted so seeing that and their development with tight ends was good.”
Meanwhile, Canarsie (NY) three-star safety Tayvon Nelson announced a top three with Maryland, Penn State and West Virginia still in the picture. Nelson took a midweek official visit to West Virginia then headed straight to Maryland beginning June 24 where he reunited with teammate and priority target Dillan Fontus. Cornerback coach Henry Baker has led the way in Nelson’s recruitment while the official visit gave him an opportunity to learn more about his defensive fit in the Terps’ scheme, drawing comparison to current Colts rookie safety Nick Cross.
“He was telling me how they really like me. he likes that I’m versatile but also they were going over the defense, what they run at Maryland, his coaching style and what he looks for in an athlete,” he said earlier this week. “They like my size and my versatility. I can go in the box and I’m not scared to tackle.”
Walker does not have an official commitment date while Nelson announced he will go public on July 23.
