Former Maryland guard Kevin Huerter will play elsewhere next season.
The Atlanta Hawks agreed to trade the fifth-year guard to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Justin Holiday, Mo Harkless and a protected 2024 first round pick, per Adrian Wojnarowski. The move comes just days after the Hawks acquired former San Antonio guard Dejounte Murray, making the Hawks’ backcourt more fluid heading into the offseason.
For Huerter, Sacramento has also shifted their backcourt following the beginning of free agency. Malik Monk signed a two-year, $19 million deal after Damian Jones landed with the Lakers and declined the qualifying offer on former Villanova guard Donte Divincenzo. Now, Huerter will likely start alongside De’Aaron Fox after wrapping up a career season.
Huerter averaged double-digits for the third consecutive season, finishing with 12.1 points in 29.6 minutes per game and playing in all but eight games. The former Terp is also entering the second year on his four-year, $65 million deal and shot 41.9% from the field and 38.5% from three.
Sacramento isn’t exactly known as the franchise where players thrive, but Huerter will look to change that as he once again enters a starting role. For Maryland fans, they’ll hope he does as he suits up alongside former Maryland center Alex Len as well.
Meanwhile, former Maryland center Jalen Smith has resigned with the Indiana Pacers on a two-year, $9.6 million deal, per Wojnarowski. After the Suns declined to pick up his 2022-23 team option, Smith found himself on the move midway through the season where he carved himself a niche on the Pacers’ roster.
Smith, the former tenth pick in the 2022 Draft, made the most of his second stop after averaging 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and one block while shooting 53% from the field and 37.3% from three in 22 games.
