Maryland is on the cusp of a decision from South Carolina guard Jermaine Couisnard while “Primo” Spears came off the board on Friday after transferring to Georgetown, but the staff will host a new name next week.
Jon Rothstein reported on Friday that former Mississippi State guard Shakeel Moore will visit Maryland and Seton Hall next week, shaping up for the first recruiting battle between Kevin Willard and Shaheen Holloway.
Moore entered the transfer portal last week and became the seventh scholarship player to leave Mississippi State since Chris Jans was hired as head coach. He played just one season in Starkville before hitting the portal for a second time.
The former four-star prospect out of Moravian Prep (NC) signed with NC State over Providence, Virginia Tech and DePaul among others and made an impact as a freshman, averaging 6.8 points and team-leading 1.4 steals in two starts and 25 appearances. Moore shot 50% inside the arc and was named ACC freshman of the week after 17 points in 26 minutes against North Carolina. Moore transferred to Mississippi State where he started in 29 of 34 games and averaged 8.7 points, three rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game.
Maryland, meanwhile, is coming off a week where they landed a contingent commitment from former Charlotte guard Jahmir Young who will play in College Park as long as he returns to college. Willard and Co. return Ian Martinez and Ike Cornish to the backcourt while incoming freshman Noah Batchelor, a three-star prospect out of IMG Academy (FL) can play the three. Maryland has four scholarships available heading into the 2022-23 season.
