Veteran defensive back hits transfer portal

Senior cornerback Lavonte Gater announced he’s entering the transfer portal, becoming the third player and second cornerback to elect to transfer over the last 48 hours.

Gater finished second on the Red Team with five total tackles during Saturday’s scrimmage.

Gater appeared in all 30 games through his three seasons in College Park and registered 23 total tackles and one forced fumble last season. Gater appeared as a reserve defensive back as a true freshman and shined on special teams before becoming a mainstay in the cornerback rotation over the last two seasons.

The former three-star prospect out of Ballou (DC), the alma mater of head coach Mike Locksley, signed with Maryland over Rutgers, Temple and Old Dominion in the 2019 class, but ironically becomes the second former Ballou prospect to transfer alongside defensive tackle Andre Porter.

With the recent transfer, Maryland now has five vacant scholarships for the 2022 season.

Waiting for the NCAA to turn off the spicket on this transfer portal shyte. It's coming. More and more coaches and AD's are complaining nationally about this.... Something is going to happen. I could see allowing only 1 instant transfer for a player's career but only after your complete two years of eligibility at your inital college and if your on schedule with your course take.... I see University of Pittsburg AD/ Coaches have complained (yesterday )on their star wide receiver Addison was tampered with by USC and Lincoln Reily..... Changes are in the wind on this morass exodus

The Pitt head coach and all the articles have conveniently left out the roll of the agent. It's a new world. The USC staff does not have to contact Addison. Agent direct to possible NIL deals is not tampering. And athlete to athlete is not either, like Caleb Williams. Players have always talked and coaches have used it in the past, now they are scared, because the conversations are not just about the school and the staff, but about the NIL process. They don't have to end up at USC, our last guy went to State Penn after visiting with the Williams family.

Sucks to lose depth but it’s a symptom of recruiting improving. Older guys are losing opportunities and looking for a better opportunity to use their limited eligibility left.

Yeah but that doesn't explain Jackson, Porter, Chop, Jennings, Lewis etc. Recruiting classes should no longer be celebrated. They are one year feeler trails for players. Wait until September to applaud or disapprove or Locksley's roster.

He has time to fill some holes and do some of his own magic. But the Dec/Feb celebrations are basically comical now. After 2 years you have to understand 40% are gone. Not gonna waste time guessing which ones I should be excited about.

Ultimately Gater is at best the 4th corner. He’d definitely play but for a guy going into his last year, he probably wants to play a lot.

to me these three entrees to the portal are surprising bc all three were slated to see decent time this year. I mean Kenny Bennett I could see may have gotten passed by a couple of the younger guys, but Gator i feel would have played a ton and Porter seemed like someone who was in line for solid mins if not this year for sure next year
