Archbishop Spalding (MD) has a lot of talent to replace on both sides of the ball heading into the 2022 season, but the fall will also mark the first season that 2025 quarterback Malik Washington takes the reigns as the next starting quarterback.
The 6-foot-5, 206-pound prospect will also keep pace on the hardwood as he hits the AAU circuit with Team Melo this summer, embracing himself as a two-sport athlete. “I’ll play both all four years, especially school ball,” Washington told Inside the Black & Gold. “I don’t know if AAU will continue but if I can, I’ll prolong it but I’ll definitely do both all four years.”
In the meantime, Washington is training with longtime quarterback guru Chris Baucia with QB Factory where he’s developing himself as the next elite local quarterback. “I just want to prove I’m the best out here. My name is getting out there a little bit, but not as much as I can get out there so I’ll put on a show.”
As he soaks in the early stages of his recruitment, Washington picked the brains of his older teammates to learn how to navigate his recruitment as interest begins to pick up. “I talk to those guys a lot, learned all the tips and tricks when it comes to recruiting and they’re like my big brothers, took me under their wing and showed me the ropes,” he added.
Virginia Tech reeled in his former teammate, cornerback Mansoor Delane, last year and became the first school to offer back on April 27 after Hokies offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen stopped by the school. “It felt great. they came out that Wednesday morning, went to school that day, coach called me down in homeroom and told me they were going to offer. I called him after school, it was surreal because you work so much to get that first one. It just let off a huge, huge weight off my shoulders and it felt good.”
Washington added he and his team “should go up for one of the 7-on-7s” at Maryland later this month, but he will head to Rutgers on Saturday, Penn State on June 15 and will likely make the trip down to Alabama on June 22 to throw for the Crimson Tide staff. Washington has already taken unofficial visits to both Penn State and Rutgers and added “when I went on both of those visits, they showed me a lot of love at those camps.”
His first trip to Rutgers didn’t disappoint. “I loved it, loved the whole vibe, practice and everything. It was nice.” Washington is already familiar with Penn State, as well. “Same thing, loved it when I was up there so they showed a lot of love.”
While he’s flashed a strong arm and dual-threat traits, Washington added he can “probably work on my legs the most. It’s not bad right now but it can always get better.” What kind of quarterback does he see himself as?
“I see pro-style. I can do a little bit of both. If I need to run I can take off but I prefer to sit in the pocket and deliver the ball.”
