Four-star PG Payton Jones commits to Maryland men's basketball after official visit

After the first official visit weekend of the fall, Maryland men's basketball has its first 2027 commit in the fold.

Four-star point guard Payton Jones has announced his commitment to Maryland on Friday afternoon, days removed from his first visit to campus. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound top-60 prospect arrived in College Park for an official visit beginning this past Friday, Sept. 4 before pulling the trigger on Maryland over Oklahoma State, Baylor, Clemson, Houston, Boston College and Cincinnati. Jamison gave the staff his commitment at the end of his visit to give head coach Buzz Williams some momentum on the trail.

“The coaches, they show how they take care of the guys," Jones told IBG about Maryland.

Assistant Steve Roccaforte led the way with Jones as the staff has been involved with the four-star through his high school career, first extending an offer when Buzz was still at Texas A&M. That pursuit carried into the start of Buzz's tenure in College Park after Jones added the Maryland offer in the summer of 2025. The depth to the relationships mattered for Jones, who pulled the trigger on his commitment prior to his final scheduled official visit to Boston College later in the month.

The newest commitment likely ends a pursuit in the backcourt that saw a flurry of targets come off the board after the staff pursued four-stars J'Lon Lyons, ONeal Delancy and Tyrone Jamison Jr. before the top-100 prospects committed to Butler, Houston and Baylor through 2026. Texas three-star point guard Damon Miles is currently and tentatively scheduled to officially visit Maryland the first weekend of October.

The four-star bolsters the outlook of the backcourt, though head coach Buzz Williams will also likely enter next offseason with a chance to retain DJ Wagner, Bishop Boswell and Andre Mills through the expected 5-for-5 rule, giving Jones a chance to elevate the 2027-28 point guard rotation.

Jones is coming off a season at Beaumont Central (TX) where he averaged 20.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, three assists and 2.3 steals per game along with a state championship appearance. The four-star is set to suit up at Dynamic Prep for his senior season.
