Four-star Payton Jones sets commitment date
Fresh off an official visit, a top 2027 target for Maryland men's basketball has set his commitment date.
Four-star combo guard Payton Jones is set to announce his commitment at 2 PM on Friday, Sept. 11 among a final group including Cincinnati, Clemson, Maryland and Oklahoma State. Boston College was previously expected to host Jones for an official visit the weekend of Sept. 18, but that visit was canceled coming out of the weekend.
The top-60 prospect visited Cincinnati back in June before visiting Clemson then Oklahoma State in the two weekends prior to arriving in College Park for his official visit beginning Sept. 4.
While head coach Buzz Williams has been an active piece in the pursuit, assistant Steve Roccaforte has led the way for the entirety of the pursuit after Jones picked up an offer from Texas A&M in Aug. 2024. That familiarity and early stages of the relationship continued through the coaching change as Maryland reaffirmed the offer last summer. Jones’ official visit last weekend also marked his first trip to Maryland as the staff looks for its first commitment in the 2027 class.
As a junior at Beaumont (Tx.), Jones averaged 20.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, three assists and 2.3 steals per game after showcasing himself as a plus-defender. The composite top-60 prospect has since transferred and will close out his high school career at Dynamic Prep (Tx.).
"Payton brings elite talent, toughness and a relentless competitive edge that has made him one of the most respected guards in the country," Dynamic Prep said via release. "His ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, lead under pressure and make winning plays separates him from the crowd. Look for Payton to jump in the rankings this year."
