Former Western Michigan forward Patrick Emilien has announced his transfer to Maryland, filling the last vacant scholarships on the 2022-23 roster.
Emilien, a 6-foot-6, 205-pound forward, gave his verbal to the Maryland staff on Tuesday morning. Emilien drew interest from Louisiana Tech and South Dakota State among others while he also had scheduled visits to both UConn and UMass while St. Bonaventure was in pursuit, but despite not taking a visit to Maryland under the current staff, the opportunity to fill a need at a Big Ten program loomed large. Emilien’s sister, Gabrielle, also plays soccer at Howard which helped give Patrick familiarity with the DMV and Maryland program.
Emilien played his first three seasons at Western Michigan and started in 16 games over 77 appearances. The Toronto native averaged 3.8 points and three rebounds during his time with the Broncos before transferring to St. Francis Brooklyn last season where he averaged 12.5 points and 6.2 rebounds in 30.4 minutes per game across 27 starts. Emilien led St. Francis Brooklyn last season in blocks (20) and rebounds while shooting 47.8% from the floor and registered four double-doubles and 20 or more points four times during the 2022-23 season.
Now, he gets the chance to play on a bigger stage and rounds out the frontcourt alongside Donta Scott and Julian Reese with Pavlo Dziuba and Arnaud Revaz as reserves. The addition of Emilien ends a longtime pursuit in the frontcourt to stabilize the rotation heading into the first season under head coach Kevin Willard.
Emilien joins the program as a grad transfer with one year of eligibility, while head coach Kevin Willard has one scholarship available for the 2022-23 season.
