Mady Traore announces transfer to Maryland basketball

Maryland basketball has landed its final piece out of the portal for the 2023-24 season as former New Mexico St. center Mady Traoré has announced his transfer to Maryland, giving the frontcourt another long-term piece.

Mady Traoré, a 6-foot-11 rising sophomore and former three-star prospect out of National Christian Academy (MD), originally signed with New Mexico after initially committing to NC State over offers from Arizona State, Auburn, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, LSU, Oregon, Pitt, USC and Virginia Tech. Traoré enrolled at New Mexico State midseason and played just 51 minutes in seven games and averaged 1.4 points and 0.4 rebounds during a season filled with controversy.

The former top-150 recruit now joins a frontcourt that features Julian Reese, Donta Scott, Caelum Swanton-Rodger, Jordan Geronimo and Braden Piece as head coach Kevin Willard fills the final scholarship on next year’s roster.

Maryland had an extra scholarship to work with after Ian Martinez elected to enter the transfer portal last week just hours ahead of the deadline, giving Willard room to work with. Maryland also returns Jahmir Young along with its trio of blue-chip incoming freshmen for year two of the Willard era.
