Ryan Ramsey pitches a perfect game in 23rd-ranked Terps’ 13-0 win

Maryland starting pitcher Ryan Ramsey pitched a perfect game on Friday night in a 13-0 win against Northwestern, the first no-hitter since former Terp Dick Reitz accomplished the feat in 1959. It’s the first no-hitter by a Maryland pitcher since March 1, 2014 when Jake Stinnett no-hit UMass.

Maryland notched the final out on a grounder to third base, leading to imminent celebration surrounding Ramsey on the mound.

Maryland recorded 17 hits and 13 runs in the win with every player in the lineup recording at least one hit. The Terps jumped out to a 9-0 lead heading into the fourth inning and added three insurance runs after Nick Lorusso homored before Maxwell Costes and Bobby Zmarzlakgot on base for extra-base hits. The 23rd-ranked Terps moved to 34-8 (10-3) with game two set for Saturday at 2 PM.

More via press release:

Ramsey Under The Friday Night Lights

  • In his first Friday night start, Ryan Ramsey the Montvale, N.J., native retired all 27 batters as he became the first Terp since Reitz in 1959 to pitch a perfect game! That 1959 masterpiece against Johns Hopkins was the first-ever Perfect Game in NCAA Division I History.

Bubba Is Blasting

  • Alleyne launched a solo home run over the centerfield fence in the bottom of the first inning.

  • It was the fifth year’s 14th long ball of the season. That leads the Big Ten.

Breaking Down The Action

  • Alleyne’s solo shot gave Maryland a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

  • Maxwell Costes and Bobby Zmarzlak crushed back-to-back home runs in the second inning, giving Maryland a 3-0 advantage on a trio of solo blasts. It was the second time this season that the Terps recorded back-to-back dingers.

  • Alleyne scored Shliger on an RBI single later in the 2nd, making it 4-0 Terps early.

  • Keister and Shliger both ripped RBI singles in the 3rd, putting Maryland ahead, 6-0, and knocking Northwestern starter Sean Sullivan out after 2.2 innings pitched.

  • Alleyne kept it going, singling and scoring Keister — making Bubba 3-for-3 with three RBIs in the third inning.

  • Shliger came home on a wild pitch and Nick Lorusso hit an RBI single, giving the Terps a 9-0 lead through three innings.

  • Lorusso crushed a solo blast to center in the fifth inning. Costes ripped an RBI double, Zmarzlak hit an RBI triple, and the Terps led 12-0 through five.

Costes Keeps Crushing

  • Costes now has 36 career home runs, good for second-most all-time in program history.

  • He now trails only Paul Schager’s 43, which were hit between 1984-87.

  • Costes also got hit by a pitch for the 59th time in his career. He is now eight away from Kyle Convissar’s 67 hit-by-pitch mark, set between 2011-14.

Notable Numbers

  • 6: Six Terps recorded multi-hit games.

  • 9: Each player in Maryland’s lineup had at least a hit.

  • 24: Shliger extended his on-base streak to 24.

  • 17: Alleyne got on base for the 17th straight game.

  • 17: Keister now has a 17-game on-base streak.

Up Next

  • Maryland and Northwestern meet again on Saturday at 2 p.m.

  • That game can be seen on Big Ten Plus and heard on the Maryland Baseball Network.
