Maryland Steamroll Rival Blue Jays 22-7 to Cap off Regular Season

If you’re still processing what happened at Homewood Field, you’re not alone. The Terps capped off a perfect regular season in impressive fashion, steamrolling the rival Blue Jays 22-7. The 15-goal margin of victory is the largest in the series history, with its 22 goals being the most that a Terps team has scored against the Blue Jays.

Halfway through the 2nd quarter, Johns Hopkins scored 2 straight goals to make it 8-3 Maryland. It looked like the Blue Jays were going to make the game more competitive like most of these matchups have been. That ended up not being the case. In the span of 10 seconds, Maryland scored 3 goals to officially shut to door on any comeback. It started with an incredible pass from Logan Wisnauskas to Anthony DeMaio, followed up by Wisnauskas’s goal of his own, with Luke Wierman scoring the third right off the faceoff. This run was the start of 14-1 run that included a 10-goal 3rd quarter.

In a game with so many goals, there are bound to be some individual standout. One of which was former Blue Jay Owen Murphy, who tied a career-high with four goals and set a career high in points with five. Another standout was Keegan Khan who had four goals and an assist, the fifth time he has had four goals this season. Of course, Wisnauskas who finished with eight points on five goals and three assists. In the process, he became the 1st Terp to reach 300 career points and just the 19th in men’s lacrosse history. He also set a record for most eight-point games in Maryland history with his seventh. Altogether, the Terps had 10 different goal scorers, the seventh game in a row with at least double-digit goal scorers.

The specialists were also locked in, as face-off man Luke Wierman finished the game 17-27 to go along with nine groundballs to bring his total to 100 on the season, and one goal. Logan McNaney was on fire between the pipes as well, stopping 73.3% of the shots he faced (11-15), his sixth game with double-digit saves this season.

With the undefeated regular season and No. 1 seeded locked up, the Terps now get a well-deserved couple of weeks off before the Big Ten Tournament Semifinals begin on May 5th. I will have more on our opponent once the Quarterfinals are played.
