Maryland lacrosse is now ready for the postseason.
Head coach John Tillman and the men’s team drew a seven-seed in the 2024 NCAA Tournament and will host Princeton this Saturday at 7:30 PM on ESPNU. The two teams met back on Feb. 24 when Maryland pulled out a 13-7 win as both Eric Malever and Eric Spanos led the way with five points each in College Park.
The win against Princeton would mark the end of the Terps’ hot start after falling on the road to Notre Dame the following weekend but heading into the weekend, the two teams are trending in opposite directions. Maryland has been outscored 26-14 over its last two games with the offense sputtering into May, while head coach John Tillman watched Spanos leave the Big Ten Tournament loss vs. Penn State due to injury. This will be the second time this season the Terps are on a two-game losing streak and are at risk of a three-game losing streak, which would mark their first three-game losing streak since 2009 while also marking the first time they have lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament since 1993-1994.
Princeton, meanwhile, was an automatic qualifier after winning the Ivy League and are now set to appear in their third consecutive tournament. Maryland men’s holds the all-time series lead, 35-12-1, after Tillman and the Terps secured their 13th consecutive postseason appearance.
The winner between Maryland and Princeton will face the winner of Duke vs. Utah in the NCAA Quarterfinals on Saturday, May 18.
Maryland women’s lacrosse, meanwhile, drew a four-seed for its 34th consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament as they’re set to host Robert Morris this upcoming Friday, May 10 at 12 PM. The postseason matchup marks the first-ever meeting between the two teams with either Penn State or James Madison–both regular season opponents for the Terps–up next. Maryland posted six wins over ranked opponents after finishing 12-5 (4-2) in the regular season, while sixth-ranked Rutgers sent the Terps home early in the Big Ten Tournament.
