New Jersey QB Jack Moran ready for official visit to Maryland

Hun School (NJ) quarterback Jack Moran is set to throw for over 60 coaches at his school on Tuesday with a slew of incoming Power Four interest into the spring, but after he unofficially visited Maryland in May for spring practice, the 6-foot-4.5, 225-pound quarterback is set to return next month for his official visit.

Maryland became Moran’s first Power Four offer nearly a year ago after making the trip to campus to throw for the staff, and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has kept in touch with the regional quarterback since then. “I was there for a camp in the summer, that’s when they offered me and that’s when my relationship kind of started with coach [Josh] Gattis. I have a good relationship with him, talk to him pretty often. He’s looking for someone who can throw the ball in my class so I think I fit that well. I definitely stay in touch with him.”

Moran’s visit earlier this spring gave him a chance to get a closer look at the offense, while he got a chance to begin building his relationship with head coach Mike Locksley. “I got to sit in there with all the quarterbacks, coach Locksley was in there going over some plays. I got to see how coach Locks kind of coaches the guys up in the position room because obviously that’s a little different than on the field. The staff is doing a great job right now of getting that program in the direction they should be going. Coach Locks and coach Sumlin, they both came to watch me throw in the winter. That was my first time getting to sit down with coach Locks after, getting to listen to what he thought about it. That went well and then when I visited for a spring practice, I got to sit in his office and talk again so that relationship has really been built up and grown.”

With three quarterbacks currently battling for the starting quarterback job heading into the 2024 season, Maryland is looking to bolster the room through the high school ranks and Moran knows he isn’t the only target on the board. With Moran official visit set for the weekend of June 14, while fringe four-star QB Malik Washington is set to come in the following weekend, Moran details what Gattis is looking for in his next signal caller.

“What I was told is he wants a bigger frame who can push the ball downfield. I know they have quite a few kids who can really toss it and he wants more of a pro-style kid. I know he’s recruiting other guys too, but for the most part, a big kid who can put the ball downfield.”

UMass became the latest school to jump into the picture with a verbal offer while East Carolina, Temple, Marshall and Charlotte are also involved. Maryland is the lone school with plans in place to host him next month, but they aren’t expected to be the only school.

“I’m going to take others. Right now I’ll probably set one to East Carolina, see what else happens in this contact period then go from there.”

Jack Moran is not yet rated by On3, but is coming off a junior season where he threw for over 1,000 yards and tossed ten touchdowns while completing 68% of his throws.
