Maryland football the only Power Four school with no outgoing spring transfers

The transfer portal has become the new backbone of college athletics over the last three years after the spring window saw hundreds of more student-athletes enter their names in recent weeks in search of new homes. Players were able to enter their name into the transfer portal through April 30, while graduate transfers able to enter through May 1, as schools had 48 hours to finalize the outgoing transfer. But with the deadline to enter the portal now in the rear view mirror, head coach Mike Locksley finds his program in elite company after Maryland football became the only Power Four school with zero outgoing transfers during the spring portal window.

Maryland worked hard to retain its core group of players through the spring portal window with teams across the country looking to fill remaining needs, and head coach Mike Locksley saw his post-spring ball team remain in tact with veteran leaders like Roman Hemby, Kaden Prather and Donnell Brown leading the team into 2024. After watching six players depart the program in each of the last two spring portal windows, Maryland was able to hold onto its playmakers while maintaining its depth heading into summer.

It’s an impressive feat for a program that’s watched its culture gradually shift since the end of the 2020 season as Mike Locksley rebuilds the program. Of course, Maryland turned to the transfer portal following the 2023 season to restock a handful of positions as MJ Morris (NC State), Jalen Huskey (Bowling Green), Aliou Bah (Georgia), Alan Herron (Shorter) and Josh Kaltenberger (Purdue) prepare to step into impact roles this fall.

Meanwhile, Maryland will look to add reinforcement to the roster with the limited space remaining as one portal lineman is expected on campus this weekend. Former Liberty offensive tackle Chase Mitchell, who entered the transfer portal last week with a ‘Do Not Contact’ tag, confirmed to IBG that he will visit Maryland on Sunday fresh off a visit at USC. Mitchell, a 6-foot-4, 330-pound grad transfer, entered the portal after appearing in 31 games through his college career, along with starting all 14 games as the Flames’ starting left tackle in 2023. Vanderbilt was the first school to host him with an already established relationship with former Liberty offensive line coach Chris Klenaksis taking the same position with the Commaddores earlier this offseason. Maryland was also set to host former Arkansas tackle Andrew Chamblee next weekend, though he’s now expected to land at SMU.
