Ahead of the spring transfer portal opening Wednesday, April 16 through April 25, more Terps have made announcements regarding their future. Updates tracker of all departures through the end of spring ball.
4/17: former four-star enters transfer portal
After leaving the program back in late February, former Maryland left tackle Andre Roye has entered the transfer portal. Roye, a former four-star in the 2022 class, started in seven games in 2024 while battling injuries through the season. Story on his original transfer here
Maryland also saw former Wise and 2022 three-star signee Jayden Sauray enter the transfer portal. Sauray, a former high school teammate of new Maryland WR Jalil Farooq, did not appear in a game during his three seasons with the program.
4/16: former starter expected to enter the transfer portal
After three seasons with the program, LB Caleb Wheatland is expected to enter the transfer portal as inside linebacker coach Zac Spavital now turns to Daniel Wingate and Mike Harris to lead the room in their third year with the program. Wheatland, a former three-star out of Avalon in the 2022 class, made 11 of his 12 career starts in 2024 while his forced incompletion in the final minute sealed the homecoming win vs. USC. Wheatland totaled 100 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 14.5 TFLs during his time with the program.
Maryland will now turn to a linebacker room that still presents plenty of confidence in College Park with Daniel Wingate and Mike Harris leading the unit in year three while Keyshawn Flowers and Keyari James step into the two-deep in year two. Maury (VA) LB CJ Smith, who enrolled in the program, has also flashed through his first three months on campus, doing well picking up the playbook and scheme. Zac Spavital also welcomes former St. Thomas Aquinas LB/SAF Travares Daniels into the inside linebacker room once he enrolls in June.
4/16: former transfer OL reenters the portal
Former Akron offensive lineman Jayvin James has reentered the portal after signing with the program in December. James, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound lineman, appeared in 12 games and started in nine games at Akron in 2024 as the Deerfield Beach, FL native joined the program as a long-term piece along the trenches.
4/16: QB room takes depth hit
Champ Long is expected to enter the transfer portal, a source confirmed, after just two seasons with the program. Long, a former three-star out of St. Peters Prep (NJ) in the 2023 class, redshirted his first season with the program before playing in the 2024 season finale vs. Penn State, ending his career without a completion on just three attempts. Though the move won’t lead Maryland into the transfer portal to replenish the roster spot, the top of the room is still led by Justyn Martin, Malik Washington and Khristian Martin as head coach Mike Locksley looks to identify his starting quarterback for the second consecutive offseason.
April 15: former walk-on departs
Former Georgetown Prep offensive lineman Billy Malloy has left the program after two seasons. Milloy, a 6-foot-6, 296-pound lineman, was entering his third season after primarily filling in along the third-team offensive line.
April 14: local OL expected to depart the program
After two years in College Park, former McDonogh interior offensive lineman Tamarus Walker is expected to enter the transfer portal, his agency DreamMakers tells IBG. Walker, a former three-star in the 2023 class, played both guard and tackle during his time with the program and has three years of eligibility remaining.
April 14: former local four-star hits the portal
After two seasons with the program, outside linebacker Dylan Gooden announced his departure into the transfer portal.
“First, I would like to thank God for blessing me with the opportunity to play the game that I love. Next, I want to thank the University of Maryland football program and staff for allowing me to create unbreakable bonds, along with unforgettable experiences. Most importantly, I want to thank my family and friends for supporting my dreams and always being there for me. After a conversation with God and my family, I have decided to enter the transfer portal with four years of eligibility remaining,” Gooden said in a statement announcing his departure.
Gooden, always viewed as a high ceiling project as an outside linebacker, played in two games in 2024 before suffering a season-ending upper body injury. Gooden previously committed to Maryland over Rutgers out of high school, joining teammate Neeo Avery in Maryland’s recruiting class as safeties coach James Thomas led the way on the duo.
April 12: local products hit the portal
OL Terez Davis and OLB Kellan Wyatt have announced their departures.
April 11: experienced interior DL departs
DL Lavon Johnson, who struggled with injuries, will enter the transfer portal with two years of eligibility remaining.
