Maryland has added another non-conference game against a likely preseason top ten team for the upcoming 2022-2023 season.
The Terps will face UCLA on December 14th in College Park with a return game in Westwood for the 2023-2024 season, per Jon Rothstein.
Despite losing their top stars Johnny Juzhang, Peyton Watson, and Jules Bernard, the Bruins were able to reload with a plethora of talent that includes two highly coveted five-star freshmen in Amari Bailey and Adem Bona as well as borderline five-star point guard Dylan Andrews. UCLA will also get back 2 of their tournament phenoms in Tyger Campbell and Jaime Jacquez. The Bruins are ranked 4th in ESPN’s Way-Too-Early Top 25 rankings and 6th in the Rothstein 45.
Yet another high-quality opponent scheduled by Kevin Willard who has made it more than clear by this point that he is going to put his guys to the test right off the bat despite it being just his first season in College Park. With UCLA officially on the schedule for this year, here is a look at the non-conference schedule as it stands today:
vs. Western Carolina (11/10 | Home Opener)
vs. St. Louis (11/19 | Hall of Fame Tip-Off | Neutral court)
vs. Miami/Providence (Winner or Loser | Hall of Fame Tip-Off | Neutral court)
vs. Tennessee (12/11 | Barclays Center quadruple header | Neutral court)
vs. UCLA (12/14)
@ Big Ten/ACC Challenge Opponent
Maryland could also participate in the Gavitt Games, featuring the Big East vs. Big Ten.
The news comes on the same day that Maryland officially announced the matchup against Tennessee.
Release:
"We are thrilled to continue our relationship with the Basketball Hall of Fame in playing Tennessee at Barclays Center in Brooklyn,” said Kevin Willard, Maryland head coach. “Maryland has a huge fanbase in the New York metro area and we are excited to be able to play in front of them. Playing against Tennessee is another example of the challenging schedule our Maryland teams are going to play."
Maryland and Tennessee have split four previous meetings having not played in 38 years. The Terps won the last match-up in 1984, 72-49 at the Great Alaska Shootout. College Basketball Hall of Famer Len Bias scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in that game. Maryland also won an NCAA Tournament game against the Vols in 1980 as Greg Manning Sr., scored a game-high 28 points.
Maryland has played at Barclays five times, going 3-2, also winning two games in the Barclays Classic in 2016, playing UConn in 2013 and playing in one of the first college basketball games at the venue back in 2012 against Kentucky.
