Maryland’s first gameday of the 2022 season is here and with that brings local visitors to College Park. We start with a 2023 name that fans should keep close tabs on over the next day. Churchill WR Zeke Avit will head to campus with his brother, 2024 running back David Avit, on Saturday and I expect Avit to make his commitment public before he leaves campus. The 6-foot-1 wide receiver has been on the radar since camping twice back in June, steadily rising on the staff’s board, and opted to visit Maryland on July 30 instead of following through on a camp invite to Penn State. Avit would become Maryland’s 21st commitment this cycle. A trio of current commits are confirmed to visit with Pallotti (MD) safety Alex Moore, Canarsie (NY) safety Tayvon Nelson and Wise (MD) cornerback Mykel Morman on campus, but the highlight on the confirmed group of visitors is Quince Orchard (MD) four-star linebacker Jaylen Harvey. Filling in as either a defensive end or outside linebacker, Maryland has prioritized the near 6-foot-2 edge rusher and reached out to the four-star prospect on September 1 as they look to keep him close to home. Auburn became the latest school to join in on a national offer list but Penn State is a school to watch for him early on. While Maryland is still in the mix early for Harvey, the Terps are in a good spot with four-star linebacker Gabe Williams who will also visit on Saturday. Williams transferred to St. Frances this offseason before returning back to Pallotti and will lead a stout Pallotti defense alongside Daniel Wingate and Alex Moore. Williams visited campus back on July 30 for the barbeque as well. In the 2025 class, a pair of Spalding prospects will head to campus in quarterback Malik Washington and defensive back Jayden Shipps. Washington, who also stars for Team Melo on the hardwood, steps into his first season as the starting quarterback and the dual-threat prospect has shown he’s capable of becoming the next elite prospect in the area. Penn State and Virginia Tech have joined Maryland in offering Washington in the early stages. While Mike Van Buren is the name to know in the 2024 class, Washington is the name to know in the 2025 cycle. Shipps will also become one of the more coveted prospects in the 2025 cycle and picked up an offer from the Terps back on March 15. North Stafford (VA) athlete Zion Gray and Quince Orchard (MD) athlete Iverson Howard will also make the trip to Maryland this weekend, their first since the spring. Other expected visitors this weekend who do not hold offers are Calvert Hall (MD) athlete Ricardo Cooper, Lackey (MD) defensive back Jamari Somerville, Quince Orchard (MD) QB Nino Marzullo, SFA defensive end Christian Ose-Afiana, Quince Orchard ATH Shae Terry and Brentsville (VA) LB Langston White.
