Hours after three-star tight end Dylan Wade announced his commitment to Maryland, his teammate has now followed suit.
Three-star athlete Derrick Rogers has announced his commitment to Maryland over offers from East Carolina, Florida A&M, Miami, Nebraska and Tulane among others.
Led by outside linebacker coach James Thomas, Maryland formally extended an offer two days prior to his official visit on June 17 as the 6-foot-1 athlete was joined by Wade and four-star linebacker Malik Bryant on the visit. Florida native and veteran Maryland receiver Jeshuan Jones hosted Rogers on his official visit and took immediate note of the connections in College Park.
“When he found out we were from Florida, that’s when we all kind of got together,” he said at the time. After taking in camps at Florida and Miami the following week, Rogers joined Wade in giving his commitment to Maryland on June 26 as the Terps work to replace a veteran room ahead of the 2023 season. Rogers details what separated Maryland from his other suitors.
“The coaches, how I bond with the coaches,” he added. “I just felt home there the whole time.”
Rogers also got a chance to spend time watching film with position coach Gunter Brewer on the visit watching film and learning how he fits into the Terps offense. “How they can move their receivers around. You don’t play one thing and that’s how I am right now so that’s how I fit in.”
Getting a chance to play with his teammate in College Park was the cherry on top for his decision. “That’s lit,” Rogers added. With Wade in College Park, all eyes turn to four-star Malik Bryant as the Terps look to complete the trio.
“He was happy because that’s my boy. My uncle coached [James Thomas].”
Rogers began playing football during the spring of 2021 when he first burst onto the recruiting scene, drawing interest on both sides of the ball. Considered an athlete, Rogers is committed to Maryland as a wide receiver while Florida and UCF evaluated the three-star prospect as a cornerback target.
As a junior lasts season, Rogers caught 44 passes for 727 yards and 11 touchdowns to help Jones to an 11-3 record. Rogers is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by On3, sitting as the 165th-best prospect in Florida.
