Loyola Blakefield TE Commits to Maryland

Maryland held the edge for Loyola Blakefield (MD) tight end AJ Szymanski ever since offering back on May 25 and after his official visit over the weekend, the in-state target becomes the latest to join the fold.

“It’s good football. I have trust that they’re going to be a bigger program these next few years,” Szymanski said heading into his official visit. “Coach has said they’re like a sleeping giant so always see them improve and I think it’s a great opportunity for me to come together to part of their team and help rebuild from the ground up.”

The 6-foot-5, 245-pound prospect as Szymanski and his younger brother, 2024 offensive lineman Trevor Szymanski, took in a spring practice back in late March as AJ committed to Maryland over offers from Army, Navy, Old Dominion, Richmond, Temple and UConn. He also camped at Pittsburgh, Wake Forest and Wisconsin in June and took in a team camp in Louisiana ahead of his Maryland official.

Quarterback Billy Edwards hosted Szymanski on his official visit while tight ends coach Mike Miller has led the pursuit even prior to an offer, giving the two a strong connection heading into the visit.

“It’s definitely been developing. We’ve been talking every now and then, couple of times a week. He’s just a great guy. I went down for their practice and see how they run. How the pass game works, how the run game works. Ever since I went down, he’s been telling me how they use their tight ends and how they’ll use me, how they’ll implement me into the offense.”

Szymanski becomes the first tight end in Maryland’s class and joins St. Frances receiver Ryan Manning, Irvington receiver Nasir Addison, St. Peters Prep quarterback Champ Long, McDonogh interior lineman Tamarus Walker, St. John's receiver Sean Williams and Madison County cornerback Jonathan Akins.
