Canarsie (NY) DE Dillan Fontus Commits to Maryland

Canarsie (NY) three-star defensive end Dillan Fontus has announced his commitment to Maryland over Kansas, Indiana and Nebraska among others. His teammate Tayvon Nelson announced his commitment to the Terps just minutes before.
Maryland has prioritized the 6-foot-5, 260-pound edge rusher since January with cornerbacks coach Henry Baker leading the charge for both Fontus and teammate Tayvon Nelson, helping the Terps secure their second edge rusher this cycle. He gave his commitment to the staff during the second week of July.
Fontus visited College Park twice, including the 7-on-7 tournament during the first weekend of June, and returned to campus for his official visit during the weekend of June 24 as he and Nelson soaked in the campus and facilities. Defensive coordinator Brian Williams also played a strong hand while head coach Mike Locksley has become a familiar face in Fontus’s recruitment. “It was great to get around them, be around them for the next 4-5 years if I were to go there. Just a really good time,” Fontus said following his official visit.
As defensive tackle Taizse Johnson hosted the New York product during his official visit, Maryland also communicated to Fontus that they took a strong liking to him beyond just the field. “One thing was they were talking about how I play and how I can grow as a player with proper coaching. They also talked about the things I do on a day-to-day that impresses them, driving back and forth an hour to school, handling my classes. The determination I have for the game and the determination I have for life, they brought up they like that a lot.”
Fontus fits as a defensive tackle in Maryland’s current scheme and “can play in the three or four down front” as the Terps reeled Bergen Catholic (NJ) edge rusher DJ Samuels who fits the mold of a JACK.
With Maryland now sitting at 18 commitments this cycle, Baker has now reeled in his fifth target this cycle as Fontus and Nelson join quarterback Champ Long, edge rusher DJ Samuels and wide receiver Josh Richards.
Fontus is also able to enroll early in College Park.
