Recruits decommit following Maryland Football parting with Mike Locksley
With the news of Mike Locksley officially out as head coach midway through the 2026 season, the recruiting fallout has already started.
Alabama offensive tackle Caleb Canty and Texas interior offensive lineman Abdus Kone have already announced their decommitments from Maryland, the first of several expected in the wake of the mid-season firing.
Canty, a 6-foot-5, 290-pound lineman, picked up an offer shortly before his official visit the weekend of May 28, shutting down his recruitment fresh off the visit. “They’re very high on my list, so just need to see it all for myself. They were the first Big Ten school to offer me and it’s the Big Ten. I want to play in the Big Ten, but I just need to see what the experience will be like. I like the coaches. I talk to coach Wrobo a lot more now. They’re both really good guys and easy to talk to, easy to connect with.”
Similar could be said for Kone, whose offer was reaffirmed during the visit before committing the same week as Canty.
“Environment was amazing, coaching was amazing, coach Locksley is amazing. Coach Wrobo, coach Hal, I loved getting a chance to meet them,” Canty said. “Me and coach Locks [have] a tight relationship. Me and him are kind of in the same situation because I lost my mom and he lost his son so we kind of immediately connected when he said that.”
Maryland's lone 2028 commit, running back Jerome LaRue Jr., has also decommitted. LaRue took a visit to Florida the day after committing to Maryland and has kept the door open in his recruitment throughout, while he told On3, "I just spoke to my agnets and since I'm listed as a four-star and the reason we committed is now out the door, we are going to decommit from Maryland."
While Canty and Kone serve as the first announcements in Maryland's 2027 class, they're far from the only ones with several schools circling around some of the recruiting class, including four-star defensive back Kenaz Sullivan. Maryland is currently down to 20 commits in the 2027 class with both Myles McAfee and Kendon Bauer the biggest commits to watch over the next two months.
