The run isn’t over yet.

Canarise (NY) safety Tayvon Nelson has committed to Maryland as the Terps topped West Virginia for his commitment.

Nelson gave his verbal to Maryland on Tuesday, June 28. Nelson took a pair of officials during the final week of June beginning with a midweek trip to West Virginia beginning June 22 then heading directly to College Park on June 24, reuniting with fellow teammate and defensive end Dillan Fontus as the two took in their Maryland official together. Nelson joins Maryland’s class as a safety as he got an in-depth look at his fit in Maryland’s defense.

“He was telling me how they really like me. he likes that I’m versatile but also they were going over the defense, what they run at Maryland, his coaching style and what he looks for in an athlete,” Nelson said following his official. “They like my size and my versatility. I can go in the box and I’m not scared to tackle.”

It also helped that Nelson saw similarities to his high school’s defensive scheme and what Maryland does on the backend. “They run similar things to what I do in high school now so I don’t think it’ll be a hard transition to move.”

Veteran defensive back Isaiah Hazel hosted the 6-foot-2, 187-pound safety on the visit and got his perspective as well. “His perspective was a little different but not as much as I thought it was. He really liked coach [Mike] Locksley, wanted to start something new and had the same vision as coach Locks.”

Nelson becomes the latest commitment as Maryland’s 2023 class is up to double-digit verbals that began on June 25 when St. John’s (DC) receiver Sean Williams went public. Wise defensive back Mykel Morman, Southern Columbia receiver Braeden Wisloski, Loyola Blakefield tight end AJ Szymanski, East Orange receiver Josh Richards, Jones receiver Derrick Rogers and Jones tight end Dylan Wade have all joined Maryland’s 2023 class.
