Young Terps: Maryland drops third straight in puzzling loss vs. Northwestern

Welcome back to the latest episode of Young Terps, where we break down what went wrong in Maryland’s 33-27 loss at Northwestern and what it means.

Maryland was able to start hot on both sides of the ball, with the offense opening the game with a touchdown while the defense registered a pair of sacks to force an early punt. But Northwestern found its groove and four consecutive scoring possessions put Maryland in an early deficit. Drops loomed large in Saturday’s loss, while the unforced, post-play defensive penalties reemerged as Northwestern controlled the game from seemingly start to finish.

Maryland was able to generate one final opportunity with just over three minutes remaining, but an overthrow led to an easy Northwestern interception, sealing the Terps’ defeat and pushing them to 5-3 (2-3).

For a Maryland team coming out of the bye, what went so wrong for Maryland football against what was likely the best chance at a sixth win? And after having two weeks to turn the page off two consecutive losses, how does a loss like Saturday happen? Is Maryland getting to six wins now a genuine concern?

It won’t get any easier with Maryland set to face its second top-ten opponent of the season with Penn State headed to College Park next weekend, but how damaging was Saturday’s loss for fan support? We break down all the heartbreak as we critique the ‘standard’ in College Park.
