Priority target Derik Queen trims final list to four schools

After completing his final round of visits, a commitment date has yet to be set but a final group is in for Montverde Academy (FL) four-star Derik Queen with his decision on the horizon.

Derik Queen has released a final four with Houston, Indiana, Kansas and Maryland still in the mix, he told On3, while Joe Tipton noted that, “a decision is likely to come before the early signing period.”

Queen began the month of September with an official visit to Lawrence despite the Jayhawks landing five-star Flory Bidunga. Indiana was next up as head coach Mike Woodson brought in the Hoosiers’ top target for his second official visit to Bloomington. Houston, who’s emerged through the summer with the ties to Team Thrill, hosted Queen for an official visit the first weekend of October before closing out his schedule with his second official visit to Maryland beginning Oct. 21. Queen also took an official visit to LSU, while Georgetown hosted the Baltimore native for an unofficial visit over summer.

Indiana was in to see Queen at Montverde on Tuesday with head coach Kevin Willard making the trip to visit Queen one day later as the two Big Ten programs battle it out in the recruitment of one of the top uncommitted prospects available.

Queen is rated a four-star prospect and a 97 overall by On3, sitting as the third-best power forward in the country.

On3 Scouting:

Derik Queen is a big-framed post player. He is very skilled, with big hands, strength, and confidence with the ball. He can score on the block, over both shoulders. He has footwork, patience, and an array of counters over both shoulders. He can face up and knock down a shot from three. He can also attack off the bounce as a trail big or from the high post. The athleticism is a question. Where does he guard moving forward as a below-the-rim post? When the motor is running hot, he is a good area rebounder and is an adept scorer at multiple levels.
