Julian Reese named to Karl Malone preseason watch list

Maryland junior forward Julian Reese is one of two Big Ten forwards named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award Watch List, per release.

While this is the first season that Reese has been selected to the preseason list, Reese’s selection marks the third consecutive season that a Terrapin forward has been featured on the preseason watch list with Donta Scott recognized in consecutive years. Reese joins Scott, Jalen Smith and Jake Layman as players who’ve been recognized in the preseason watch list.

Julian Reese, who was also recognized as the sixth-best junior in the country by Andy Katz, was recently selected to the preseason All-Big Ten Team as he joined Jahmir Young at Big Ten media day. Reese is coming off a sophomore campaign where he averaged 11.4 points per game and a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game while posting the third-best single-season field goal percentage (63.2%) in program history. While expanding his offensive game has been a focus heading into his junior season, Julian Reese led Maryland with 42 blocks last season and posted seven double-doubles en route to an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection.

“Julian is Julian. He’s gonna kick everyone’s ass and just go at it. And that’s what Julian does and that’s why I love him,” head coach Kevin Willard said at Maryland’s media day earlier this month.

In addition to Julian Reese, the following players were recognized in the preseason watch list: Adem Bona (UCLA), Alex Karaban (UConn), Bryce Hopkins (Providence), Coleman Hawkins (Illinois), DaRon Holmes II (Dayton), Drew Pember (UNC-Asheville), Enrique Freeman (Akron), Fousseyni Traore (BYU), Graham Ike (Gonaga), Grant Nelson (Alabama), J’Wan Roberts (Houston), Jevon Porter (Pepperdine), Keshad Johnson (Arizona), Kyle Filipowski (Duke), Norchad Omier (Miami), Oso Ighodaro (Marquette), Tolu Smith (Mississippi State), Trevon Brazile (Arkansas), Tristan Da Silva (Colorado).

Maryland opens its 2023-24 season on Nov. 7 as it hosts Mount St. Mary’s at the XFINITY Center. Season tickets and mini-plans for the 2023-24 season are currently on sale now and can be purchased online at www.umterps.com, by calling the Terrapin Ticket Office at 800-462-TERP, or by emailing for more information at terptix@umd.edu.
