Maryland the latest school working to flip SEC pledge

Evans (FL) four-star safety Brandon Jacob publicly reaffirmed his commitment to Maryland earlier this month after both Missouri and Penn State were among the forefront of schools irritating the Terps’ highest-rated pledge. Still, Maryland has kept its safety board open with another spot alongside Jacob remaining, which led the Terps to Valley (AL) three-star and Missouri verbal Cam Dooley this past week.

“We’ve been talking. Coach texted me a couple of days ago but that was the first time talking on the phone when they offered me,” Dooley told IBG after Maryland extended the 6-foot-4 athlete an offer on Wednesday. “I talked to coach [Marcus] Thomas.”

Dooley committed to Missouri back on July 1 after taking June official visits to both Kentucky and Vanderbilt, but the three-star safety has kept his recruitment open with the Terps the latest school to enter the picture.

“I’m entertaining the [Maryland] offer. I’ve got to get down for a visit so I can really get a feel for it then make my decision from there. On the phone we had talked about me getting on an official sometime in December, so I look forward to that.”

While Dooley is unfamiliar with the Terps’ scheme, there’s one thing he knows about Maryland.

“The only thing I know about Maryland is they had Deonte Banks,” Dooley added. “I’ve been to Washington DC and I have family in Maryland. So I haven’t been to the school, but I’ve been there and DC.”

Dooley has ventured out to both Auburn and Kentucky for unofficial visits so far this season with the ‘Cats not giving up just yet. “Auburn is like 20 minutes from me so I really go down there a lot,” he added.

For now, Dooley doesn’t have any plans to check out Missouri this season. “It’s kind of far with plane tickets.”

Dooley is planning to take additional official visits into the offseason ahead of the December signing period with Florida, Wisconsin and Arkansas working hardest on the flip. “Wisconsin has been showing me the most love,” Dooley added as the Badgers have his teammate, Jay Harper, in the fold. “My boy talked to me about it and he really locked me in with them.”

With his recruitment still ongoing, Dooley explains what he’s looking for when he visits other schools.

“Really how the coaches are treating the players, how they treat my family and the environment, the area.”

Cam Dooley is rated a three-star prospect and an 86 overall by On3, ranked as the 57th-best prospect in Alabama.
