Maryland flips FIU verbal Larry Tarver, breaks down his decision

Maryland football has landed its second commitment in as many days as Tru Prep Academy (FL) three-star cornerback Larry Tarver has announced his flip from FIU to Maryland, fresh off of his official visit to College Park.

“During the visit. I had a feeling it was home and then when I met with coach, he said he really liked me and he was really interested in me,” Tarver told IBG.

The 5-foot-11, 160-pound cornerback committed to Maryland over FIU, Louisville and Texas A&M as cornerbacks coach Henry Baker and defensive coordinator Brian Williams led the way as the position and area recruiter. “They showed me everything. They talked about how they like me, how I fit the program. We watched a lot of film,” Tarver told IBG. “That was crazy. I just like the school.”

Texas A&M hosted Tarver the weekend of June 9, but the consistency from Maryland throughout his recruitment helped stage for his silent commitment during his first trip to College Park over the weekend. Second-year cornerback Perry Fisher hosted the Florida defensive back this weekend as Tarver now becomes the second cornerback in Maryland’s class this cycle, joining Georgia native Lakhi Roland. “The players, straight good vibes up there,” Tarver added.

The chance to sit down with Baker and Williams to dissect tape helped solidify Tarver’s fit before finalizing his new decision.

“It looked really good, I can’t lie. They didn’t just show me the things he liked, he showed me what and how he’ll help me watching the film.”

Defensive coordinator Brian Williams extended an offer to Tarver after making his way down to his school this spring, where Tarver got a chance to put his speed on display. The dual-sport athlete also posted a 10.6 100-meter and 21.55 200 meter this spring as he becomes the latest speedster to join Maryland’s cornerback room next season.

Maryland is now up to 12 commitments in the 2024 class after picking up now eight commitments this month with Tarver joining receiver Josiah McLaurin, linebacker Keyari James, linemen Anthony Robsock, Michael McMonigle, Donovan Thompson, Michael Hershey and Terez Davis.

Tarver is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by On3, sitting as the 206th-best prospect in Florida and 168th-best cornerback in the country.
