Offensive success, “attention to detail” stick out during QB Khristian Martin’s official visit to Maryland

Highland Springs (VA) three-star quarterback Khristian Martin has visited Maryland for both a game and spring practice and this weekend gave the Virginia target an extended visit at campus.

Martin made the trip to Maryland with his mom’s side of the family and was quick to note “the attention to detail” stuck out about the official visit.

“They pulled up some of my film then they pulled up film of plays, plays that my school uses and pointed out the similarities and the footwork and the things like that,” Martin told IBG. “And not only that, but the development plan as the player I am now if I were to come there today. He showed us the exact things they do in practice that translate to developing as a player. Just the development piece, knowing that my development would be prioritized.”

Running back Latrell Scott has led the way as the area recruiter as the two have built upon a steady relationship through Martin’s recruitment. “Coach Scott was recruiting me at ECU as well so when he came over to Maryland, we already had a previous relationship,” he added. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis has been able to chip away with Martin as well, most recently connecting with Martin and his mom before Martin met with head coach Mike Locksley.

Maryland’s track record on offense is another key selling point that left an impression on its top quarterback target.

“Coach [Josh] Gattis has had monstrous success in his offenses. Coach [Mike] Locksley has coached multiple successful quarterbacks, so I mean, that speaks for itself when you have multiple quarterbacks that have played under you who have gone on to play at the next level, which is something I’d ultimately like to do. It shows that obviously, you’re doing something right because you’re putting guys at the next level. Their word speaks for itself.”

Grad assistant Kyle Edwards was by Martin’s side throughout the weekend while wide receiver Leon Haughton served as his host. Martin and Haughton were plenty familiar with each other having played at rival schools less than 30 miles apart. “Just seeing his perspective, seeing how his day-to-day life is, seeing how he likes the campus. You talk to the coaches then you go back to them and ask what type of coach he is, different things like that, just the type of guy you want to play for. I think us being from the same city, we have a lot of similarities so more than likely if like he likes it, I think it’d be some type of connection I would like to be coached by with.”

Maryland’s mentorship program highlighted the life after football opportunities. “He’ll connect me with someone within the working field and that’s big. Getting internships, possibly a job. I think that’s really important.”

Martin officially visited Virginia back on June 9 before his official visit to Virginia Tech was scratched. “That’s up in the air,” Martin said as to whether he’ll end up checking out Blacksburg. With Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech his three finalists, the local quarterback isn’t far off from a decision.

“I’m hoping to narrow down and make a decision in the next couple of weeks.”

Martin is rated a three-star prospect and an 84 overall by On3, sitting as the 38th-best prospect in Virginia and the 101st-best quarterback in the 2024 class.
