OL Donovan Thompson commits to Maryland, breaks down decision

Meadowcreek (GA) offensive lineman Donovan Thompson has committed to Maryland after giving the staff his verbal on Sunday following his official visit

Thompson took an official visit to Maryland the weekend of June 23 as Mississippi State, Clemson and Duke were among the schools in the mix for the 6-foot-3.5, 305-pound lineman.

“I loved it. The staff, everything, the program as a whole is great to me,” Thompson told IBG. “My favorite part would have to be the facility, definitely the weight room. That took my breath away stepping in for the first time.”

With inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson as the area recruiter, the Terps’ newest offensive line commit has been gradually building his relationship with offensive line coach Brian Braswell since his May 8 offer. “Coach Braswell, he’s a real dude. He doesn’t sugarcoat stuff but he will coach you up at the same time. I’ve been talking to coach Braswell for a few weeks now so we’ve been able to get to know each other. He’s the type of coach that I’d like to play for.” That sentiment extended to head coach Mike Locksley. “He’s a real dude. Very, very respectable man.”

Veteran offensive tackle Gottlieb Ayedze hosted Thompson on his official visit which helped seal his decision. “He just emphasized that Maryland is the real deal. Coming from Frostburg, having to deal with the changes and the increase in intensity. He said it was hard but it was worth it because in the end, he knows he’s going to be a top-notch player.”

Thompson becomes the latest commitment for Maryland in the trenches as head coach Mike Locksley and offensive line coach Brian Braswell have restocked the unit this cycle with now five commitments heading into July. Thompson joins DeMatha (MD) tackle Terez Davis, William Penn (PA) tackle Michael McMonigle, Central Dauphin (PA) tackle Anthony Robsock and Spring Grove (PA) swing guard Michael Hershey.

Thompson also becomes Maryland’s eleventh commitment this cycle, joining Anthony Reddick, Justin Okoronkwo, Keyari James, Lakhi Roland, Josiah McLaurin and Jahmari Powell-Wonson in addition to the previously mentioned linemen in the fold.

Thompson is not yet rated by On3, but is a three-star and 84 overall by 247Sports. Thompson was also named to the 3A/4A District 4 All-Region team as a junior.
