Local Guard Raves After Visiting for Maryland Basketball’s Practice

Maryland basketball kicked off the start of fall practices on Friday and with fans on campus on Saturday, the staff took advantage to invite local recruits to watch. One who made it onto campus on Saturday is 2025 Gonzaga (DC) point guard Nyk Lewis, who was impressed with the flow and energy of practice under head coach Kevin Willard.

“I liked the intensity and how the coaches were pushing the players up and down and not just shooting at one spot,” Lewis told Inside the Black and Gold. “It looked like the tenth because the intensity was there, everybody was high positivity. They practiced like an hour 30 [minutes], two hours but everybody was just high motor, high intensity the whole time. I got to see how the coaches operate with the team.”

Lewis got a chance to briefly talk with the players and was able to get to know the staff better. Assistant David Cox is leading the charge for the 6-foot, 175-pound guard as the Terps jumped into the mix back in mid-June. “I feel like they actually tried to build the relationship with me. They were asking like my personal stuff, it just felt like good relationship building. Ever since the team camp, basically, so three or four months, they keep up with me.”

Lewis is impressed with Maryland early in his recruitment.

“It’s definitely a good program, good environment and it’s close to home so I mean, it’s just a good program overall.”

Lewis previously visited Virginia as well and after checking out College Park, he’ll head to another ACC school later this month. “I’m going to visit Virginia Tech on [October] 15th and that’s all I know for right now.”

Lewis joins 2026 guard Jordan Smith as local prospects headed to the USA Junior National Team fall minicamp beginning October 7th.

Lewis is not yet rated by On3.
