VIP: OL update, big board mover, four-star visiting Maryland

The latest notes from the recruiting trail…

Good Counsel (MD) three-star offensive tackle Eidan Buchanan is slated to make his commitment on Saturday and while I’ve heard chatter and confidence around West Virginia chances heading into the weekend, it sounds like this isn’t a done deal yet. I’m still hearing that Buchanan is still planning to take his official visit to Maryland the weekend of June 14 and has kept the final stage of his recruitment close to the vest. Maryland has prioritized Buchanan, along with teammates Gavin Crawford and Faheem Delane, through his junior season into the spring with them battling the Mountaineers for pole position while Rutgers, Wisconsin and Kentucky rounded out his recent top five. Buchanan is worth keeping tabs on through the week as Maryland looks to close with their top local target.

While we now enter wait-and-see mode on Buchanan, Maryland has good momentum on the trail and they’re on the cusp of picking up their sixth commitment in the 2025 class. While his baseball schedule has still complicated his upcoming visit, I’ve officially shifted DeMatha (MD) running back Bud Coombs to hot on the big board with the Terps in clear position moving forward in his recruitment. Again, assistant Aazaar Abdul-Rahim did well closing in a recruitment that TE coach Kevin Sumlin put a lot of effort into through Coombs’ junior season. While the Terps have pressed the hardest for the shifty back that plays an awful lot like NFL-bound RB Blake Corum, the chance for Coombs to play both football and baseball in college helped tip the scale in Maryland’s favor as the Terps look to restock the running back room. Maryland is also well-positioned for Coombs’ teammate, linebacker and top target Noah Chambers, with rumblings he could be on the cusp of a decision but there are some around the three-star linebacker who want him to stay patient heading into the eval period. With Maryland holding a slight edge over Virginia Tech heading into mid-April, Chambers is a realistic candidate to see an uptick in his recruitment once coaches hit the road with his range and length coveted traits in the three-star prospect.

Maryland won’t be done at running back even if Bud Coombs follows through on a decision with Jeff Overton and Iverson Howard in the mix, and the staff will get a chance to impress the in-state target on Tuesday with Howard expected to unofficially visit Maryland for Tuesday’s practice. If there’s a local prospect who is a true toss-up heading into his visits, it remains Howard. Maryland made the top ten for Howard back in early January with Michigan, Virginia Tech and Florida among the suitors still in the mix, but where he’s leaning remains up in the air although Maryland has remained entrenched in his top group since the start of his junior season. There was early buzz in his recruitment that Howard is trending toward the SEC, but that’s since been debunked as he irons out his official visit schedule with Michigan in line to host the four-star in June as Maryland works to finalize their official visit date.
