Baltimore receiver high on fit within Maryland’s offense after visit

Baltimore high three-star wide receiver Justin Devaughn made the trip south to College Park to check out Maryland last month, two days before officially picking up the offer from the Maryland staff. The 5-foot-10, 165-pound wide receiver spent the day in College Park before Devaughn left campus high on his potential fit within the offense.

“It was cool, it was a great practice. I just like how they move, the way they practice. It’s a speedy practice, they don’t waste any time getting to where they need to be. They get straight to it,” Devaughn told IBG. “I went to my receiver meeting before practice so I got to see the play designs and installs and stuff, so that was really good. I like it because I watch their plays, their players, see their daily work. They were focusing on hitches, go routes during the one-on-ones. And you have to know who your quarterback is too, and it was good. The ball was there. They were being competitive. I definitely think I can fit in.”

Offensive coordinator and current wide receivers coach Josh Gattis has become a growing presence in Maryland’s revamped pursuit of Devaughn with his elite speed coveted in College Park.

“I’ve been talking to him. He’s a great guy. We’ve had great conversations. We’ve been talking throughout the practices and I talked to him after. I’ve already seen the plays they run and I know they’re heavy on passing the ball. They told me just let me know because I’d be the perfect fit there.”

Devaughn doesn’t have any other visits set in stone just yet with potential trips to Pitt and James Madison in the works, but he’s been in contact with Maryland assistant and area recruiter Lance Thompson into April as the two sides iron out an official visit date.

“I’ve been talking to coach Lance [Thompson] to see when we can set up an official down there because I definitely want to.”

Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Temple, Indiana, Pitt and Kent State are among the schools to offer the Baltimore product thus far but it’s been Minnesota pushing the hardest into April with Devaughn’s lone official set to check out the Gophers the weekend of June 7.

“I would definitely say Minnesota. They do the most recruiting. I feel like I talk to them more. It used to be Nebraska, they were my first offer, but Minnesota has definitely been recruiting me the most.”

In addition to football workouts, Devaughn wrapped up his first track meet of the spring season after posting the top time in the state with a 14.38-second in the 110-meter.

Justin Devaughn is rated a three-star prospect and an 89 overall by On3, sitting as the 11th-best prospect in Maryland.
