This three-game home stand comes at the perfect time for Maryland basketball (13-7, 4-5 Big Ten) as they look to gain momentum with the Big Ten and NCAA Tournament a little over a month away.
It’s been said in a multitude of ways that the Terps’ nonconference schedule was a brutal one, and they faced a lot of adversity. Close losses to the Tennessee Volunteers and Purdue Boilermakers this season showed the potential of what this program can be under Kevin Willard.
In their latest win against the Wisconsin Badgers, the shots fell left and right. Jahmir Young did his thing as the Terps’ leading scorer with 22 points, eight rebounds, and five assists.
“I don’t think he even needs to come out [of the game],” Willard said about Young. “I think he’s got in great shape, comfortable with the size, the length [of the Big Ten]. I think he’s gotten much more comfortable with the offense.”
The team as a whole was much more aggressive on both ends of the floor. You could see it on the defensive end because their full-court press forced the Badgers to play fast when they usually play at a slower pace.
On the offensive end, the Terps took advantage of the Badgers’ lack of rim protection. The Terps were able to get chance after chance at the rim while also knocking down the perimeter shot efficiently.
Next, Maryland basketball takes on a Nebraska Cornhuskers team (10-11, 3-7 Big Ten) coming off of their second loss in a row. They’re led by forward Derrick Walker (13.6 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and guards Sam Griesel (11.2 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 4.1 apg) and Keisei Tominaga (10.6 ppg, 47 percent shooter from the field, 37 percent perimeter shooter).
The Cornhuskers have had key wins against the Florida State Seminoles, Boston College Eagles, No. 7 Creighton Blue Jays, Iowa Hawkeyes, Minnesota Golden Gophers, and Ohio State Buckeyes. They’ve proven that they can beat good teams, but it hasn’t translated to Big Ten play.
Maryland basketball fans can see this matchup on the Big Ten Network at 4:30 p.m. ET.
