VIP: more feedback from OV weekend, new OV visitor, change of plans

A couple more notes I’ve gathered coming out of the weekend and around the area… All the feedback surrounding King George (VA) three-star WR Mekhai White has been nothing short of positive coming out of his Maryland official visit as the staff was able to roll out the red carpet. I still view this as a Maryland-Virginia Tech battle with the Hokies getting a chance to close the month out with their chance to impress Mekhai and his parents, but based on several conversations around his recruitment, I believe it’s Maryland who is currently best positioned heading into the second official visit, which remains subject to change. A notable development, however, is there’s a vibe coming out of the weekend that White and Chanz Wiggins, his teammate and another prime target, are looking to suit up together at the next level. A package deal isn’t set in stone, but it’s a possibility the two have discussed and a consideration both families are high on. “If it happens, it happens” White told IBG on Monday. Duke got a chance to host Wiggins over the weekend with his relationship with assistant Zohn Burden strong, but the Blue Devils are third with the Hokies the clear team to beat. But assistant Gunter Brewer has made Wiggins as much of a priority as White through the process, checking out the duo at school, texting both daily while making the trip to Virginia to watch Wiggins’ swim meets. Maryland has also built a strong rapport with Wiggins’ mom with a chance to turn the tide at the end of the month. Maryland will look to turn the tide with Wiggins, who has now become a public target for new Hokie verbal Gabe Williams as he shifts to a recruiter. IBG was at Good Counsel on Monday and while four-star LB Aaron Chiles wasn’t at practice, a source reiterated the Terps rolled out the red carpet this weekend and said Maryland is the biggest challenger to Michigan down the stretch. I won’t close the door on Florida with the Gators set for their official visit this weekend—Florida also did well to open the door a bit more for four-star LB Jaylen Harvey during his OV this past weekend—but I view this as a Maryland-Michigan battle while AD Damon Evans was able to meet Chiles and the other official visitors this weekend. High three-star WR Elijah Moore brought his whole family to campus for an unofficial visit on Saturday, as reported yesterday, and he’s off the college grid this weekend as he’ll head west for the OT7 tournament. Moore has just one more official set this month for Florida State on the 23rd, while he confirmed plans for a December official to Maryland despite plans to make his commitment on July 4. “I like the idea of it. I’m still going to do it, but I think I’m going to keep my commitment the same,” Moore added. Four-star edge rusher Darien Mayo has a pair of officials complete with Clemson and Ohio State in the rear-view mirror and USC then Michigan to close out the month. After that, Mayo will bunker down with mom and dad to decide whether it’s commitment time. The sense heading into summer remains that Mayo will look to keep his recruitment open heading into the fall, with both Maryland and South Carolina pitching official visits, but the Tigers made headway to kick off the month. As for four-star running back Dilin Jones…there’s a change of plans. Jones will head west to check out Wisconsin for his first official visit this weekend, but for now, that’s the only official visit planned. The four-star was slated to officially visit Maryland the weekend of June 23 but those plans are off as he looks to the fall to take the rest of his visits. Florida State, Maryland and Virginia Tech are three schools Jones knows he will take an official to and suggested Florida as a new school he could visit, but with the updated visit timeline, Jones says he doesn’t plan on making his decision this summer. The top target was able to sit down with the full offensive staff when Good Counsel took College Park for the 7-on-7 the first weekend of June. “I talked to pretty much everybody up there. Everything is going good, going great with them. I pretty much talk with them every day.” I’ll keep Jones as ‘warm’ heading into summer but his recruitment could likely go the distance now. Elsewhere, Maryland will host Buford (GA) safety TyShun White for an official visit this weekend. Maryland is also in the top group alongside North Carolina, who hosted him this past weekend, and Michigan State, who will host him the weekend of June 23. The Tar Heels present ample familiarity in White’s recruitment with this past weekend marking at least his third trip to Chapel Hill while the Spartans are charging hard and have ammo with their NIL collective, but safeties coach Zac Spavital has been in consistent pursuit ever since inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson made his way to Georgia in early May to watch White in-person. White will make his commitment in July. Lastly, recent commit Terez Davis will follow through and take his official visit to Syracuse this upcoming weekend before returning to Maryland the weekend of the 23rd for his official visit. I wouldn’t sweat a potential flip, but head coach Dino Babers is a coach who built a connection deeper than football with Davis. Still, with an official visit to College Park still left, the DeMatha tackle should still be viewed as a hard commit. https://twitter.com/1terez3/status/1668431120017289216 On the basketball side, Maryland hosted its team camp over the weekend with over 20 teams in attendance, including St. John’s, Paul VI, SFA, DeMatha, Gonzaga, Bishop O’Connell, and Georgetown Prep among others taking the floor in Xfinity. That gave the staff a chance to watch ample local talent and also get a close look at top 2024 target Daquan Davis one week ahead of his official visit to Maryland. After taking officials to Mississippi State and Providence, Davis is currently wrapping up day one of his official visit to Notre Dame as the Terps continue to trend well in his recruitment. Davis was able to reconnect with the staff, mainly assistant David Cox, on Saturday and the chance for Maryland to solidify his recruitment ahead of his June 25 decision still has head coach Kevin Willard and the staff in line for their first commitment of the cycle. Davis still sits as ‘warm’ on the big board but could shift to ‘hot’ even before his official visit begins in College Park. Meanwhile, Maryland became the second offer for 2025 Bullis guard Adrien Stevens after unofficially visiting on Monday.
