Two-sport University of Maryland athlete Bud Coombs enters transfer portal

Maryland athletics saw a two-sport athlete officially enter the transfer portal with running back and outfielder Bud Coombs officially in the transfer portal.

Monday, June 1 marked the first day that college baseball players could officially enter the portal with Coombs among the several players to depart. Sources previously told IBG and confirmed on Monday that Coombs is entering the transfer portal for baseball where he will focus his athletic career moving forward. News of an imminent departure was first reported by IBG last week.

Coombs previously signed with the University of Maryland as a two-sport athlete with head coaches Mike Locksley and Matt Swope working in tandem to finalize his commitment out of DeMatha (Md.), but the move is expected to be the end of his college football career. After enrolling in June, Coombs suffered a injury during fall camp that sidelined him for the 2025 regular season after showing signs of earning a role in the rotation.

Coombs was cleared well before the start of his first season of college baseball as he became the freshman star that he was viewed to be coming out of high school.

Named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team, Coombs played in 30 games and registered 31 hits including 18 extra base hits and nine home runs while hitting .360 with a .779 slugging percentage and 1.270 OPS.

Coombs becomes the latest in a growing list of offseason departures for head coach Matt Swope and Maryland baseball, who finished the 2025 season 27-27 (12-18). It marked the first season since 2018 the program finished below .500 overall
