Maryland football got its first bit of bad news this offseason after news broke on Wednesday evening of a key contributor now facing legal battles.
Rising senior cornerback Dontay Joyner was held without bond and is facing two misdemeanor harrassment-related charges, one charge for telephone misuse and one charge for electronic communication. A university spokesperson told ABC7, "we are aware of the situation and have no further comment at this time."
Per court records, Joyner's trial is set for July 8 while his telephone misuse charge is connected to "repeated calls with the intent to annoy, abuse, torment, harass, or embarrass another."
Joyner becomes the second transfer portal addition in his class to be arrested after edge rusher DD Holmes was charged with a DUI during the first of two bye weeks in the 2025 regular season.
Days before his arrest, Joyner was among the nine players including three cornerbacks who were named among the best draft-eligible players at their position heading into the 2026 season. Joyner transferred into Maryland from Arkansas State with high expectations as the 6-foot, 180-pound transfer registered 40 total tackles, two interceptions and one TFL in his first season with the program.
