The pick is in as St. Frances (MD) three-star wide receiver Ryan Manning has committed to Maryland, he told Inside the Black and Gold.
Maryland beat out Minnesota, who hosted him the weekend of June 10 for an official visit, and Manning breaks down what made the Terps the pick.
“It’s home so I want my parents to be at every single home game and I feel like it’s the best fit for me in the offense,” he told Inside the Black and Gold. Manning told wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer and inside linebacker coach Lance Thompson, the lead recruiter, this week and spoke with head coach Mike Locksley on Thursday night. “They’re excited for me. They’re expecting big things from me, to come in and make an impact.”
The 5-foot-10 receiver began his football career at Bowie High School just two years ago before transferring to St. Frances this offseason. “It’s a blessing. I never saw myself at this point two years ago but I’m very excited for myself and excited for what’s next.” Manning has made it to College Park four times since the start of spring ball, including the spring game, and will return to College Park next weekend for his official visit.
“I kind of knew I’d say after I took the visit, it was way back,” he added. Manning becomes the second wide receiver in Maryland’s 2023 class as he joins Irvington (NJ) three-star Nasir Addison and the lineage of receivers that have played in College Park played a hand in his decision.
“Seeing Rakim Jarrett stay home kind of gave me that edge to pick Maryland as well because Stefon Diggs, a lot of great receivers have played for Maryland and that kind of inspired me. I wanted to be a part of that. I just love the campus in general. It just makes me feel comfortable when I step foot in Maryland. It felt like the right fit for me.”
Manning becomes the fourth commitment in Maryland’s 2023 class, joining Addison, St. Peter’s Prep (NJ) quarterback Champ Long and McDonogh (MD) guard/center Tamarus Walker. With his decision now public, Manning will look to become an asset for the Terps on the trail and will look to bring more with him with four-star teammate Dashawn Womack another priority target this cycle.
“More linemen. More everything. I’m trying to recruit some guys to come to Maryland because everybody wants to go everywhere else so I’m trying to get some guys to stay home with me. That’d be great.”
Manning is rated a three-star prospect and an 88 overall by On3, sitting as the eleventh-best prospect in Maryland.
