Second Maryland verbal invited to U.S. Army Bowl

DeMatha (MD) three-star Bud Coombs has made a name for himself as a two-sport athlete, but on Thursday, the in-state pledge became the latest Maryland pledge invited to the U.S. Army Bowl. Coombs now becomes the second Maryland pledge set to play in the Army Bowl, joining Virginia linebacker Carlton "CJ" Smith while Maryland would love to add a third to that with top target Malik Washington also set to close out his high school career in the upcoming bowl game. The third annual U.S. Army Bowl is set for Dec. 21 at The Ford Center in Frisco, Texas. Current freshman and former blue-chip safety Brandon Jacob also suited up in last year's game. Coombs, a 5-foot-9, 185-pound running back, announced his commitment to Maryland back in April with Michigan and Texas A&M among others in the mix. Coombs also became the first two-sport athlete in Maryland's 2025 class, while Mervo (MD) three-star Justin DeVaughn will look to add to that after committing last week and getting the green light to run track in College Park after dominating through his high school career. For Coombs, the chance to become a two-sport athlete was a tipping point in his recruitment as assistants Kevin Sumlin and Aazaar Abdul-Rahim ran point to seal the deal on the football side. “That time , I went to the tailgate, coach took me there and everyone there was like ‘oh you’re Bud? We’ve heard so much about you.’ It was just a good moment,” Coombs told IBG. “I stopped by for football, just walked through and got a quick tour and talked to the coaches real quick, but it was good.” Following the Army Bowl, Coombs will head back to DeMatha for his final semester before enrolling in College Park next summer where he looks to become a missing piece to a new-look running back room that will lose Colby McDonald and potentially Roman Hemby following the 2024 season.
