Pitching stays strong as Maryland baseball tops Northeastern, 7-2

Maryland baseball scored first and was able to hold in a 7-2 win over Northeastern on Friday afternoon as they opened the Winston-Salem Regional. Maryland got the scoring going in the bottom of the first when Nick Lorusso drove a solo shot over left field, becoming the first Division I player in 20 years to record 100 RBIs in a single-season. Lorusso’s solo shot also set a program record for both single-season home runs (24) and total bases (191). https://twitter.com/PGCollegeBall/status/1664697863408959493 Eddie Hacopian followed that up with another solo shot in the second inning, giving Maryland a 2-0 lead, before a pair of singles in the third and fourth inning helped Northeastern tie the game at two. But on his second at-bat of the day, Lorusso recorded a leadoff triple in the bottom of the fourth before Ian Petrutz brought him on a sac fly, giving the Terps a 3-2 lead. Two more runs in both the sixth and eighth inning helped Maryland move on in a 7-2 win. Jason Savacool picked up his ninth win of the season in the starting, allowing just two runs and five hits to seven strikeouts in six innings. It would be Kenny Lippman who came in the seventh and eighth inning before Andrew Johnson picked up the save. Friday afternoon’s win gives Maryland their 42nd win this season, their second-most since the 2015 squad that found their way to the NCAA Super Regionals. Maryland has now one at least one game in its last six NCAA Tournament appearances. Maryland will now face the winner between George Mason and Wake Forest for game two on Saturday at 6 PM.
