Fans are still awaiting the full Maryland men’s basketball schedule for the first season under head coach Kevin Willard, but the Terps have their matchup set for at least one non-conference tournament.
Maryland will face Saint Louis in the first round of the 2022 Hall of Fame Tip Off at Mohegan Sun, while Providence will play Miami, according to Jon Rothstein.
Saint Louis returns three starters from last year’s squad in guard Yuri Collins, guard Gibson Jimerson and center Francis Okoro while guard Javonte Perkins returns after missing the 2021-22 season due to a torn ACL. "I get to show myself for another year and prove I'm back from injury. I feel like it can't hurt me too much," Perkins told 5 On Your Side's Frank Cusumano about why he wanted to return. "I can get back there and play in front of the fans again. I feel like it's a win-win situation."
Saint Louis finished 23-12 (12-6) last season before falling 80-68 in the first round of the NIT. Maryland, meanwhile, will look to bounce back after suffering their first losing season in 30 years. The Billikens check in at 27th in Rothstein's preseason rankings while Providence checks in at 33rd with head coach Ed Cooley fresh off a contract extension. Miami also paid for an impact transfer in Nijel Pack, bolstering their aspirations for the 2022-23 season after last season's Elite 8 loss to Kansas.
The event was reported by Rothstein back in October while the matchups are now set as Maryland works to bolster their non-conference slate, a point of emphasis under athletic director Damon Evans. Though Maryland faced Virginia Tech at home and Florida in Brooklyn last season, Evans noted that “there’s plenty of room in there to play some very, very good teams” in the weeks leading up to filling the vacant head coaching position. “And those are my intentions moving forward,” he added.
