Maryland Women's Basketball: Sellers waived; 2025-26 Big Ten opponents announced

The latest news on Maryland women's basketball:

Former Maryland star waived

After being projected as a first-round pick in last month's WNBA Draft, former Maryland senior guard Shyanne Sellers surprised many after falling to the 19th overall pick to Golden State, the league's newest expansion team. The good news was that the selection also gave Sellers a chance to reunite with a familiar face in Chloe Bibby, but that hope ended on Saturday following a surprise announcement from the franchise.

Golden State announced that Sellers had been waived ahead of the team's first preseason game.

"She picked up everything we asked her to, did everything that we asked," Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase said following the announcement. "It’s just that I have to choose the best 12 that are going to fit. Doesn’t mean it’s the most talented, it means it’s the best 12."

Washington Post reporter Kareem Copeland also reported that Sellers, who suffered a leg injury during the second half of conference play, " passed medical exams before leaving Maryland and with the Valkyries. The knee wasn’t an issue/factor in the decision. Was diagnosed with a PCL sprain against Texas in late January. 12 week recovery. Was moving fine in camp."

2025-26 Big Ten opponents announced

The women’s basketball 2025-26 opponents were released Wednesday afternoon by the Big Ten Conference.

The Terps are scheduled to play 18 conference games this upcoming season, including eight home and eight away games, for a total of 16 single-game opponents.

The Terps will host Indiana, Iowa, Northwestern, Penn State, Purdue, Wisconsin, Washington, and Oregon. Then, they will hit the road for games against Illinois, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Nebraska, Rutgers, USC, and UCLA.

Maryland will also play a home and away game against Ohio State.

The Terps were strong in away games during the 2024-25 season. They had a 10-1 record on the road. Maryland’s one road loss of the regular season came against Ohio State in January, when the Buckeyes downed the Terps, 74-66.

The Terps home game record was still an impressive 13-4, but Maryland performed better outside College Park.

Maryland finished the 2024-25 season with an impressive 25-8(13-5 Big Ten) record, where the Terps made a strong run to the Sweet Sixteen.

Head coach Brenda Frese’s addition of new portal transfer commits gives Maryland fans a glimpse into an exciting upcoming season. Terps fans can also look forward to the return of guards Kaylene Smikle, Saylor Poffenbarger, and Bri McDaniel.

The non-conference games will be scheduled at a later date.
