Maryland football now has its portal kicker with former Richmond kicker Sean O’Haire going public with his decision.
O’Haire, a 6-foot-1 kicker originally out of Ireland, joins the program with four years of eligibility after suiting up in just four games and a playoff game in 2024
But his first season of college football was enough to impress after finishing a perfect 12-of-12 on FGs with a 50-yard career long and a pair of 47-yard makes as a true freshman.
O’Haire was also named Coastal Athletic Association Special Teams Player of the Week as well as the Stats Perform FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week after contributing 17 points in the Spiders' 35-24 victory over Towson, helping Richmond secure its seventh consecutive win and remain undefeated in conference play. In just his second college game, O’Haire nailed kicks 21, 22, 36, 18 and a 47-yard field goal, his initial career-best before drilling a 50-yard field goal vs. William & Mary. His five field goals set a new program record and tied an FCS high in 2024, while the 17 points were tied for the most points in a game in Richmond's history.
After watching inconsistency at the position since Chad Ryland became the next kicker out of the program, O’Haire would have a chance to cement the special teams unit as coordinator Andre Powell quietly eyed an upgrade since spring ball kicked off.
O’Haire fills the vacancy left by former Maryland kicker Jack Howes, who entered the transfer portal last week.
O’Haire becomes the third specialist to join the program in the last two offseasons, but he now serves as a key clear boost at kicker with Bryce McFerson set to return for a second season as the starting punter.
