Maryland is still sitting at a pair of commitments in the 2023 class heading into June, but the Terps made the top group for their top overall target on Saturday afternoon.
Archbishop Carroll (DC) five-star athlete Nyckoles Harbor announced a top seven of Georgia, LSU, Maryland, Miami, Michigan, South Carolina and USC. The 6-foot-5, 235-pound athlete has multiple questions to answer in his recruitment—track, football or both—at the next level, along with which side of the ball he’ll play. While he figures out the final answers with months until he decides on a commitment, no school has hosted the five-star product more than Maryland.
Harbor visited Maryland last fall for the Howard game when the staff was able to roll out an in-depth visit, giving him an opportunity to sit down with academic advisors alongside his mom. Harbor’s most recently visited Maryland back in March with his teammates where he got a chance to spend ample time with the full-staff, including head coach Mike Locksley.
“Just going up with teammates and people I’m around a lot, you see them, take pictures, but me I got real comfortable with the coaching staff,” Harbor said last month. “Got a real good relationship with the whole coaching staff now and just getting real comfortable with the players too because they might be my future teammates so jus make sure to see how everything going. It’s a real good program, coach [Mike] Locksley is doing and then coach [Mike] Miller, we have a little secret where if I go there, you’ll see something crazy.”
With track playing a prominent role in his recruitment, Harbor got a chance to meet with the Terps’ staff and has a strong connection with one assistant. “Coach Garfield [Ellenwood], love that man. It was definitely helpful getting to know him and we’re really close. We have set goals and we see eye-to-eye. I’m going to a coach that my coaches like and will elevate me to the next level, so he’s good.”
Harbor drew buzz this spring when he revealed that USC and Michigan were two schools sticking out to him ahead of his first trip to Los Angeles for a track meet and visit with the Trojans, but with more trips looming to SEC suitors and an extended timeline, it will be a heavyweight battle to close it out as his recruitment heats up.
Harbor drew national attention after recording a 10.29 second time in the 100 meter back on April 3.
Harbor is rated a five-star prospect and a 98 overall by On3, sitting as the sixth-best prospect in the nation.
