Maryland’s first depth chart of the season has been released. Quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa returns for his third season as the starting quarterback, giving him his second full season as he hopes to shatter the single-season records set last year. Maryland also unveiled its starting receivers with a talented two-deep boosting the potential of the aerial attack. Jeshaun Jones, Rakim Jarrett and Dontay Demus will lead the way with Jacob Copeland listed as an "OR" alongside Tai Felton as Maryland is well aware of just how explosive they can be through the air. “I feel like just having all those guys in the world and just being able to put us all in the field at the same time is just like really good because you can’t really key in on one guy, you have to play our offense truthfully,” Demus said about his unit. Demus is still expected to be available on Saturday after staying on the field through fall camp. Elsewhere, CJ Dippre is listed as the starting tight end where he fills in as a blocking tight end that has shown the ability to break off in the passing game. Corey Dyches, meanwhile, is listed as the backup. Maryland will also trot out a near identical starting lineup as one season ago. Just like in the spring, Johari Branch has moved to center and Spencer Anderson is in at right guard with DJ Glaze becoming a full-time starter at right tackle. Glaze started at left tackle in last season’s opener against West Virginia and bowl win against Virginia Tech and made four consecutive starts at right tackle to close out the 2021 regular season. Freshman lineman Coltin Deery, meanwhile, is listed as the backup center just three months after arriving on campus while Andre Roye and Max McCree are listed as the backup left and right tackles. Greg China-Rose is listed as the primary starter at the JACK, while an "OR" separates Jaishawn Barham and Fa'Najae Gotay. Former Alabama and West Virginia linebacker VanDarius Cowan is listed as the starting SAM. Cowan joins the program with seven career starts in 23 appearances and will play a big role in Maryland's potential to generate pressure off the edge this season. Maryland returns all three starting cornerbacks from last season in Deonte Banks, Tarheeb Still and Jakorian Bennett as the trio reclaim their standing in the secondary. With Jordan Mosley and Nick Cross moving on, Maryland will trot out a pair of new starting safeties in Beau Brade and Dante Trader this season. “I think me, Dante , really the whole safety room, has really come together this offseason,” Brade said during camp. “We need to really lead the defense even though we’re probably the youngest and least experienced position group on the defense. I think we’ve shown what we’re capable of throughout camp.” In the return game, running back Roman Hemby and cornerback Deonte Banks are the two that won the kick return job while an "OR" separates Jeshaun Jones and Tarheeb Still on punt return.
