Maryland Basketball Conference Schedule Released for 2022-23 Season

Maryland men’s basketball already knew their conference matchups for the 2022-23 season, but the Big Ten finalized the conference slate on Thursday afternoon. Maryland will kick its season off with a home opener against Illinois on December 2. In addition to Illinois, Maryland will host the following 2022 NCAA Tournament teams at XFINITY Center: Ohio State (Jan. 8), Michigan (Jan. 19), Wisconsin (Jan. 25), Indiana (Jan. 31) and Purdue (Feb. 16). The home finale will take place on Feb. 26 with the Terps hosting Northwestern. Maryland hosts five games on weekend days (Friday through Sunday): Illinois (Friday, Dec. 2), Ohio State (Sunday, Jan. 8), Nebraska (Saturday, Jan. 28), Penn State (Saturday, Feb. 11) and Northwestern (Sunday, Feb. 26). The Big Ten Men's Basketball Tournament will be held Wednesday, March 8, 2022 through Sunday, March 12, 2022 at the Target Center in Minneapolis. Maryland will take part in the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off beginning November 19 against Saint Louis and the winner/loser between Miami and Providence. Nine days later, Maryland will travel to Louisville in a matchup against two first-year coaches for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. Within two weeks, Maryland will travel to the Barclays Center to take on Tennessee, an expected ranked opponent, then host UCLA on December 14. “For me, it’s important that you have bye games, that you have some games that, some home games to kind of get repetition, competition,” Willard said on Hear the Turtle this summer. “But I also like to challenge our guys and I think it’s when you play a tough non-conference schedule, it prepares you for the Big Ten grind. We have a stretch in December that’s gonna be extremely, extremely challenging but at the same time, we’re gonna have a stretch in January and February that’s gonna be extremely challenging. So, I think it just helps you prepare. It gives your players a chance to play against some of the best players in the country every night. And I think it’s worked.” Led by Jahmir Young and Don Carey, Maryland welcomes six newcomers to the roster as first-year head coach Kevin Willard looks to get the Terps back to the NCAA Tournament. Maryland kicks off the season on November 7 against Niagara.
