Cedar Grove (GA) cornerback Lakhi Roland only picked up an offer from Maryland back in January, but the contact with Maryland began during his junior season as area recruiter Brian Braswell began scouting the 6-foot prospect. “I talked to them and stuff like that. A month or two before they offered, I went up on like a team visit so I had seen a little bit before.” After extending the offer, cornerback coach Henry Baker picked up the pace and began reaching out to Roland as the two grew close. That led to Roland’s first unofficial visit when he came to campus last Saturday to watch the Terps’ spring practice. Ironically, Roland told IBG that he knew “maybe like last Friday” that Maryland was the school he wanted to head to for the next level. “I went up there. They made me feel comfortable. They didn’t pressure me to commit at all. The guys are cool. I’ve got a good relationship with coach Baker and they sent two guys to the draft.” Roland also got a chance to sit in position meetings, giving him a different perspective on Baker’s approach. “I think he’s a good coach. I’ve sat in the team meetings and talked to him. Even when I’m not up there, he always calls me and checks on me. I think he’s going to get me where I need to be.” Roland told the staff shortly before announcing that he was jumping aboard, giving the Terps their third commitment in the 2024 class. “They were definitely excited to hear that. I’ve been talking to coach Baker, coach Braswell, coach Locksley. That’s where I want to be right now” With UConn, Coastal Carolina and Pitt among the schools in pursuit, Roland says that Maryland will be his first official visit spot. “I’ll make Maryland my first official, definitely.” Will he take other visits? “I plan on taking all of my visits,” he added. “I told the coaches. They said they don’t mind competing at all and just be open with them about my plans.” Lakhi Roland is not yet rated by On3. Related Links
