Virginia athlete reconnects with offensive staff on latest visit

Collegiate (VA) athlete LJ Booker had made his way to College Park a pair of times over the last year, but last weekend’s visit to College Park gave him a chance to reconnect with a former friend and his new area recruiter.

“It was good to watch practice, see Leon again. We played against each other when he was at Benedictine. Good to see coach Scott since he left ECU. He was recruiting me at ECU and he’s like my area recruiter now. He reaches out to me maybe once a week or so. It’s been going well.”

The 6-foot-1 athlete had already been in contact with wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer dating back to last summer, but the latest visit gave Booker a clear understanding of what the next step looks like between him and the Terps.

“When we got there, we watched a video with coach [Tommy] Paolucci then we went out for practice. Then I got a chance to sit with coach Scott a bit. It was a little relationship-based, a little about next steps for the recruiting process but it was a really good conversation. They said they wanted me every time I run, send them my times. It’s either I do that or I come up in the summer and run the 40.”

While the Terps monitor the Virginia athlete as they gauge his fit on the offensive side of the ball, Booker admitted his impression of the Terps is positive given the consistency and transparency from the staff.

“I saw a little bit more of the facilities this time around. I’ve seen the indoor, but I hadn’t really seen the weight room, team meeting rooms, practice field. It was awesome, really good to see everything

Before coach Scott got there, Coach Brewer was the one really on me. Coach Brewer still sends me messages every day, so I still hear from him and coach Scott.”

Booker will look to hit Rutgers by the end of the month, though nothing is set as he’s in the midst of track season. While a camp visit to Maryland is on the table, Booker knows which two schools he wants to take officials to in June.

“Virginia Tech and Duke and I’ll probably take one to Rutgers as well because they reach out all the time and they do a great job recruiting me.”
