Gunter Brewer headed to Virginia Tech as director of high school relations

The coaching carousel has hit College Park again as Maryland wide receiver coach Gunter Brewer has left the program to become the new director of high school relations at Virginia Tech. Gunter Brewer leaves the program after two seasons at Maryland where he coached Rakim Jarrett, Dontay Demus, Jeshaun Jones and Jacob Copeland among others as the Terps produced consecutive top-three passing offenses in the Big Ten. The possibility of Brewer departing the program became a more serious concern through February with the NFL the initial expected landing spot after the Chicago Bears showed interest, one year after the Oakland Raiders expressed interest. Brewer becomes the second assistant to depart from the program this offseason after Henry Baker, who left the program following the bowl win, was named the new cornerbacks coach at Marshall under head coach Charles Huff. Maryland announced the hire of Aazaar Abdul-Rahim last month to replace Baker as the D.C. native moved quickly to reel in 2024 four-star Kevyn Humes. Brewer, who replaced Joker Phillips as the position coach heading into the 2022 season, joined the program after three seasons at Louisville. Brewer has spent over 30 years coaching including previous stints at Ole Miss, Oklahoma State, Marshall, Ole Miss and Wake Forest -- his alma mater. Brewer also spent one season in the NFL, serving as the wide receivers coach for the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2018 when he worked with Alshon Jeffrey and Nelson Agholor, who managed to catch and hold onto the ball under Brewer's guidance with a career-high 64 receptions. Head coach Mike Locksley will look to fill the position with Maryland set to hire their fourth wide receiver coach heading into Locksley's sixth season with the program. The position could draw significant interest, though, given the Terps' approach on offense in Locksley's offense. Tai Felton and Kaden Prather both return in 2024 while Octavian Smith, Shaleak Knotts, Braeden Wisloski and Ryan Manning are among the next wave of wide receivers looking to play prominent roles next season. Maryland football will begin spring practice in less than one month with the first practice set for March 28. Related Links
