Maryland baseball sweeps Bryant in first home series win of 2024

Maryland won their third straight weekend series to begin the 2024 season. This weekend, they welcomed Bryant to College Park and were able to come away with a sweep, moving to 9-3 overall on the season. Here is how the weekend looked for Maryland:

Friday: Maryland 8, Bryant 3

The Terps scored singular runs in each of the first four innings on Friday, highlighted by Kevin Keister’s second home run of the season. Maryland was able to add three more in the fifth thanks to RBI by both Hacopian brothers. Bryant had a ninth-inning home run by catcher Brandyn Durand, but it was not nearly enough. Kenny Lippman gave Maryland their best start of the season to date, throwing six and not allowing an earned run. Trystan Sarcone pitched the final three innings for the Terps.

Saturday: Maryland 7, Bryant 0

Saturday was the first shutout of the season for Maryland. It was a hot start as the Terps scored five runs in the first four innings thanks to RBI hits from Devin Russell, Alex Calarco and Elijah Lambros. Maryland added on one more in both the fifth and sixth innings, which included Russell’s second home run of the season. A day after Kenny Lippman went six, Logan Koester outdid him going seven shutout innings, allowing just three hits and three walks. Nate Habertheir pitched the final two innings for Maryland.

Sunday: Maryland 11, Bryant 7

Things got a little hairy early for the Terps, but they were able to rebound and complete the sweep. It was a 1-1 game going to the third inning, when Gavin Noriega gave Bryant their first lead of the weekend with a two-run homer. From there it was all Maryland as the Terps scored two in the fourth and fifth, and four in the sixth, highlighted by Alex Calarco hitting a home run. With the score at 9-3, Bryant scored four in the 7th to make it interesting at 9-7, but two more in the eighth was able to seal the deal for the Terps. Logan McMannis made his first start for Maryland and struggled a bit going just two and a third innings, allowing three earned runs in his appearance. Logan Berrier was excellent in the middle innings for Maryland throwing three and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief.

Takeaways:

Lineup Changes

Matt Swope shuffled the lineup throughout the weekend. Most notably, Alex Calarco played first base on Saturday and Sunday, marking the first time he has played in the field. Eddie Hacopian played left field this weekend for the first time in his Maryland career. In addition, Randy Carlo and Ben Nardi made their first starts for Maryland.

Offense Continues to Hum

Major weekends from Calarco, Eddie Hacopian, and Elijah Lambros led the way as the Maryland offense remains one of the better offenses in the Big Ten. Hacopian specifically has gotten off to a blazing start with his average sitting at .432 after the weekend.
