Former Maryland assistant Henry Baker expected to land at Marshall

Maryland football has only had one coaching change through the offseason so far with Aazaar Abdul-Rahim replacing Henry Baker as cornerbacks coach for the 2024 season, but Baker is now expected to coach elsewhere next season.

Baker is expected to be named the cornerbacks coach at Marshall under Charles Huff, a Maryland native who served as the Terps’ assistant offensive line coach back in 2009. Marshall finished 6-7 (3-5) in 2023 following Huff’s third season as head coach.

Baker coached at Maryland for four seasons as the cornerback coach and spearheaded recruiting efforts in New Jersey, landing former three-star prospects like Tarheeb Still and DJ Samuels among others. Baker’s presence also played a key role in flipping cornerback Braydon Lee from South Carolina, while Lloyd Irvin credited Baker for his decision to commit to Maryland over Wisconsin.

“He’s a standup dude. Sometimes you have a serious guy, a playful guy, but he’s the perfect blend,” Irvin said on signing day. “He understands the importance of having a family sense to the [defensive back] room. He always gives me advice away from football so both me and Bray, coach Baker plays a big role in our commitment to the University of Maryland because I feel comfortable putting my future in the hands of a guy who speaks and conducts himself the way he does.”

Maryland also produced a pair of NFL cornerbacks under Baker with Deonte Banks and Jakorian Bennett wrapped up with their rookie seasons, while safety Nick Cross credited Baker during draft preparation before becoming a third round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Tarheeb Still and Ja’Quan Sheppard look to become the newest Terps in the NFL.

Baker began his coaching career as a recruiting intern at Maryland back in 2001 before coaching at Delaware, Rutgers, UNC. Baker spent the 2019 season with the New York Giants as an assistant defensive backs coach before joining Maryland.

Maryland announced the hire of Aazaar Abdul-Rahim back on Jan. 12 where the D.C. native will serve as the co-defensive coordinator alongside Brian Williams, in addition to being the associate head coach for defense and cornerbacks coach.
